46 At 7.45 am on 17 Jan 1941, Walter Dennison was serving as a Greaser on the Almeda Star when she was about 35 nautical miles north of Rockall in the Western Approaches and hit amidships by a torpedo fired by the German U Boat U-96 causing her to stop. The ship did not immediately sink but was subsequently hit by two further torpedos. Despite launching four lifeboats and with people still on deck, U-96 opened fire with her deck gun. A fourth torpedo was fired which exploded in her forepart and within three minutes she sank by her bow.
Almeda Star had transmitted a distress signal and the Royal Navy responded by sending seven destroyers that searched the area but all 360 people on board were lost and U-96 escaped undetected.
He is commemorated in Part IV, Panel 5 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England.

47 At the Battle of Jutland on May 31st 1916, in the first engagement between the British and German battle cruisers, Indefatigable was in the rear opposite SMS Von Der Tann. After about 25 minutes, a hit on the fore turret penetrated the ship's magazine, blowing the ship in half. She sank at five minutes past four with a loss of 1,017 crew - there being just two survivors.
Commemorated at the Chatham Naval Memorial.
