GRO Online Index for Births and Deaths

A revision occurred in November 2016 to the General Record Office online index of births and deaths, part of which and for a trial period still currently available, is the option to purchase a PDF (uncertified) version of the certificate for the lower price of £6 instead of the £9.25 cost of a regular certificate .

The major part of the update concerned the issue of new indexes and for the birth index the mother's maiden name is now shown where previously this was only available for births after July 1911. Where the mother's name is simply shown as a dash, this would generally imply an illegitimate birth. The birth index only covers the period from July 1937 when registration was introduced until end of 1917. For births after this date, I suggest you use FreeBMD where the index is available up to end of 1984 but the full name is not always shown. Subscription sites such as Ancestry or Find My Past have records later than FreeBMD.

The death index covers the period from July 1837 up to Dec 1957 and the full name is now shown as well as the age at death (which previously was only available for deaths after July 1866). For infant deaths, the age at death was shown in years whereas it could have been days, weeks or months. This seems to have been corrected and is now shown as 0 for deaths in the first year. Since Jun Q 1969 the date of birth is shown as opposed to age at death.

The improved indexes open up more opportunities when researching your family tree for with the introduction of the mother's maiden name as it is now possible to find the correct parents for children with similar names and dates of birth and finding children who were born and died between census dates by using the search facility and including the mother's maiden name.
